Why is water quality important for boiler systems?
Water Quality BlogCheck out our blog post about why hard water can be damaging to your boiler system, and why we always recommend adding water filtration.
What is a combination boiler?
Ideal Exalt CombiA combination boiler operates as its name suggests - it does a combination of two things; produces heat and produces hot water. In many cases, properties have what's called an indirect water heater. This type of water heater has a storage tank and works to heat the water and then store it for later use, whether that be for showers, washer machines, dishwashers, etc. A combination boiler eliminates the storage tank and works to heat the water only when needed. There are pros and cons to both systems, and it's best to know what works for you and your family before deciding either way.
How much will a boiler installation cost?
It's hard to say without specifics. An installation is determined by many factors, such as; the size of the boiler in comparison to the size of the home, the type of boiler, zone requirements, boiler room access, modifications needed to meet today's code, and other variables. It's best to request quotes and explore all of your options.
How often should my boiler be cleaned?
The short answer is annually. Some systems can go longer depending on the amount of use or the type of fuel, but generally, we suggest an annual tune-up. In most cases, a systems warranty requires maintenance annually to ensure full coverage. An annual visit can also provide you peace of mind, as the technician will be able to detect any leaks or issues that could cause problems in the near future.
How do I determine the efficiency of a furnace?
We choose YORKFurnace efficiency has come a long way over the years. Although these systems have generally been on the lower end of the AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating, they have seen great improvement in recent years. Generally speaking, if a system is 85% efficient, you're losing 15% of your heat energy. These days, we're seeing furnaces up closer to the 95-98% AFUE. Keep in mind, these systems are rated for an efficiency if the ductwork does not have any leaks or holes. It's important to have your installer or technician verify that all ductwork is in proper working condition to maximize your benefits.
How do you know when a furnace should be replaced?
It's convenient to let a system continue if it's generally providing the heating benefits you need, but that's only convenient until suddenly it's not. If you need frequent repairs, your furnace is making louder than normal noises, your fuel costs have shown a considerable increase, the system is 20+ years old or CO2 is a concern - it's time to replace your system without question. Sometimes it's best to be proactive in this case and set your home and family up for a comfortable winter with highly efficient furnace replacement.
Why are furnaces not recommended for homeowners with allergies?
Furnaces generate and move heat through blowing air, which stirs up particles and dust throughout the ductwork and air inside the home. Although the allergens will settle down when the system is dormant, those same allergens will settle inside the ductwork and blow back into the home once the furnace operates again. This is why it's crucial to ensure your air filter is changed regularly to reduce the amount of allergens that work their way through the system.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a mini split?
This one is short and sweet. A mini split simply provides air conditioning benefits. A heat pump, despite its name, provides heat and air conditioning functions. Considering the similar cost of a mini split to a heat pump, it's generally a no-brainer to install a system with both functionalities.
How do you make sure your electrical service panel is correctly sized to meet the requirements of your heat pump?
We leave that one to the professionals. To ensure your panel is capable of the added load of a heat pump or multiple heat pumps, a licensed electrician would take on the task of wiring to and from the panel.
How do heat pumps perform in cold climates?
Haier ArcticThis one depends on the brand and model that's installed. We look at cold climate capabilities since we are located in New England, and require a lower temperature operation. That's why we always choose the Haier Arctic series. This model operates at temperatures as low as negative 33 degrees.
